(Trigger warning sxxual abuse) I was 8 years old, the first time I was affected by someone’s unacknowledged shadow. I had a friendly neighbor who would fix things when they broke in our apartment, who always had a cold Coca Cola and a sweet treat when my mom was at work. (I wasn’t allowed to have caffeine or much sugar growing up) On a warm afternoon, after sharing a cold coke and some chocolate on his front porch, he said he had a surprise inside that was WAY better. My poor little 7 year old, who whose tummy was consistently hungry, and a soul starved for love and attention went in to see the surprise. What proceeded was an hour of sxxual abuse that ended with him giving me a cookie jar filled with candy. I blamed myself for years, felt so much shame for entering his house, for accepting the candy, for being the person who must have invited that abuse at some level. From that moment on I felt like if I wanted to be “good” I had to make up for that colossal “sin” That’s the thing about shadow, when you aren’t aware, and when you can’t acknowledge, befriend and heal those parts of you, they come out as perpetrators, victims, or rescuers. When you are unconsciously acting in any of those roles, you have left yourself, your center, and you’ve lost your own ability to respond. The opposite side of this coin is false humility, trying to tone down or the inability to see just how bright our light is! Each of us is so beautifully one of a kind unique, the world would be so much less of a spectacular space with out the gift of every single one of us!!
